This September, On Earth Peace interns took part in the 16 Hour Core Kingian Nonviolence (KNV) Training. Led by facilitators Anesu Makufa and Marie Rhoades, the cohort consisted of interns Rodas Bekele, Jasmine Insaard, Hannah Groff, and Kyli Ross. The cohort engaged in lively and challenging conversations to understand the depth of this philosophy and methodology for conflict reconciliation.

As one of the three main trainings offered by OEP, the 16-hour core curriculum dives into all KNV modules, providing a comprehensive foundation. For our interns, the training provided an opportunity to ground their work in a powerful tradition of peacebuilding. The concepts also resonated deeply, offering new lenses through which to view their work and personal lives. For Hannah Groff, a key takeaway was the crucial distinction between non-violence and nonviolence. "Seeing these words separately has helped me understand the difference between complacency and taking action," she shared.

This theme of proactive engagement was echoed by Rodas, who reflected on the training’s framing of conflict as a natural part of life. "That acceptance allows us to move forward with the mindset of equipping ourselves with the tools to address the many conflicts that we encounter," Rodas noted. "We live in a world of contradictions, so it is paramount that we learn how to reconcile them without antagonizing each other."

The Six Principles of Kingian Nonviolence provided a tangible framework for this reconciliation. For Kyli Ross, the principle of "Attack forces of evil, not persons doing evil" has been particularly relevant. "This principle reminds me to focus on systems and behaviors rather than blaming individuals. It keeps me grounded in empathy and helps me lead with understanding rather than frustration," she explained.

Hannah Groff found the principle "Avoid Internal Violence of the Spirit." particularly intriguing. "I think this one resonates with me because I overthink a lot and tend to cause a lot of inner conflict because of it," she said. "This principle is a reminder to do what I can and be at peace with myself."

Interns also shared that training was deeply practical and that it equipped them with new tools. "The training gave me practical frameworks for handling conflict and communicating effectively in tense situations," Kyli confirmed. Hannah is already envisioning how to apply these lessons to her role, sharing, "I am excited to see how I take the inspiration I found from the resources we were given and create content that inspires others."

The cohort’s learning was enriched by shared experiences. Kyli pointed to the group discussions and role-playing exercises as a highlight, finding it "inspiring to share space with people who are genuinely committed to building peace." For others, the wisdom came from diving into history. Hannah cited "reading the writings of MLK Jr." as a favorite moment, while Rodas highlighted the session with a panel of experts assembled to answer their most challenging questions.

Through these eight weeks, the interns built a shared foundation in Kingian Nonviolence. They emerged with new knowledge, a refined toolkit for peacebuilding and a renewed sense of purpose for their work with On Earth Peace.
