Globally, there are now over 79 million people forcibly displaced from their homes. Experiences of violence, poverty, climate catastrophe, and persecution drive people to seek safety and well-being elsewhere. Their suffering is further exacerbated by inhumane and abusive treatment at our borders and within U.S. detention centers. How can we develop and implement a human-centered, positive peace framework in our communities to counter this egregious system and accompany asylum seekers?
Join OEP’s Migrant Justice Learning Action Community and Kathryn LaPointe, director of the Oasis Center, in a conversation about community support models. We will discuss opportunities to cultivate a diverse network of care for those seeking asylum. There will be one 75-minute session on January 23 at 3:00 PM (PST)/6:00 PM (EST) and another on January 25 at 10:00 AM (PST)/1:00 PM (EST) via Zoom. Two sessions are offered to accommodate different schedules, so attendance at both sessions is not expected. Space in each session is limited! Following this event, Kathryn LaPointe will offer future trainings to guide individuals and faith groups in the implementation of community-based responses.

Kathryn serves as the director of the Oasis Center, an interfaith service initiative of San Diego Church of the Brethren. She has been involved with all aspects of the U.S. asylum system, including training sponsors, starting church shelters, reunifying families, coordinating detention releases, and accompanying those seeking asylum to court and ICE check-ins. Her prior work included roles as a corporate paralegal, a human resource director for the American Embassy, a client relationship manager for an ethical finance firm and too many food service jobs to count. She loves drinking coffee, walking her dogs, and then drinking more coffee.
OEP’s Migrant Justice Learning Action Community is an inclusive community that provides awareness, education, collaboration, and action among advocates and organizations committed to migrant justice. Through relationship and capacity building, it is a platform that unites and empowers its members to actualize values of love, peace, justice, belonging, and human concern for migrant communities.
