Decade to Overcome Violence

Decade to Overcome ViolenceThe Decade to Overcome Violence: Churches Seeking Reconciliation and Peace 2001 – 2010 (DOV) is an initiative of the World Council of Churches. DOV is a global movement that strives to strengthen existing efforts and networks for overcoming violence, as well as inspire the creation of new ones.  The Church of the Brethren, through its representatives to the World Council of Churches, was instrumental in calling on global Christianity to set this theme for the years 2001-2010.

The Decade to Overcome Violence is…

  • An invitation to address the issues of violence
  • A spiritual journey for individuals, churches and movements
  • A study and reflection process
  • An opportunity for creative projects in preventing and overcoming violence

There are more than 145 congregations in the Church of the Brethren who have made the following commitments as part of the denomination’s Decade to Overcome Violence efforts:

  • make a conscious effort to do peace education among its members and to work to reduce violence in its community, nation, and world;
  • call one or more members to coordinate its involvement in the Decade; and
  • lift up Christ’s call to peacemaking in worship and prayer.
