Counter Recruitment

Get Connected

On Earth Peace’s Encountering Recruitment Network is a way to connect with other local organizers around the country for learning and mutual support.  Here are the ways we can help!

On Earth Peace offers. . .

1. Intake interview.  At your request, an On Earth Peace organizer will schedule a telephone interview in which to find out more about your interest and your hopes for a counter-recruitment ministry/program.  In this conversation we hope to find out about your interest and your concern, and to identify specific ways to support and encourage your local efforts. We will bring a long-term and organizing perspective to the work.  Together we will ask, How does it make sense to develop this work in your setting? Send an e-mail to set up an appointment.

2. Organizing Packet.  The Organizing and Outreach Packet is intended to be an introduction to the broad movement of counter-recruitment.  It offers a selection of resources representing some of the best of what’s available, as well as several key resources that On Earth Peace created for those working in a Christian-rooted context. You can also download the key elements of the packet here.

In January 2007, On Earth Peace provided an intergenerational retreat for a church congregation in northern Indiana. The weekend included information on the context of military recruitment today, spiritual exploration of Christian convictions, and planning for next steps. By the end of the weekend, participants had divided into five planning groups working on a variety of responses for their community.

3. Kickoff event.  We will support you to you conceptualize and plan a kick-off event for your counter-recruitment efforts.  This will in some way focus on strategic planning for the next twelve months.  It could be anything from a planning event with a handful of people to a congregational retreat (see example in sidebar).   Questions that we hope to address in this kickoff include: What do we hope to accomplish in the next 12 months?  Who are our allies?  What are our resources?  What do we need that we don't have?

4. Networking calls.  Every six to eight weeks, On Earth Peace coordinates a national networking call for folks doing organizing around the militarization of youth, specifically oriented to those coming from a Christian background. The calls are an opportunity to share lessons learned, receive spiritual support, to get advice and exchange wisdom.  Click here to find out about the next call.

5. Listserv.  c-r-organize is an e-mail networking list for those involved in counter-recruitment. The purpose of this low-traffic list is to share lessons learned, reflect about organizing activities, offer spiritual support and inspiration, and to provide information about monthly networking conference calls.

6. Ongoing coaching.  On Earth Peace organizers will accompany you as you develop a local counter-recruitment campaign, and are available for consultation and support.

7. Connections with the broader movement.  On Earth Peace can help connect you to others in your region and in the country who are doing similar kinds of work.  This is a movement, so let’s get connected!
